Served as Chief Information Officer for the State of California and served as Cabinet Secretary over Information Technology and was a key member of the Governor’s Cabinet. He directed the highly successful State Y2k project and reduced State Technology project failures to zero for four years. He directed an IT budget of $2.2 billion and over 5,000 Technology professionals and support staff. He worked closely with the Governor and Legislative Leaders to enact legislation to aggressively advance the use of technology to improve government services, commonly known as E-Government. For his efforts, Mr. Cortez received a commendation by the State Senate.
